To the others, the mind of a transsexual is a mysterious territory – and their needs and desires to change themselves into the other gender is confusing to straight people. So many times transgenders and transsexuals have been scoffed at by their family, friends and strangers as their being confused. Yes, they are – but not in the blasé manner that unenlightened people suggest.
The mental struggle of a transsexual is enormous – and Ethan Smith, 21, who previously used to be Emily Smith, talks about it in performance poetry at Berklee College of Music, USA. From a little girl who was never comfortable in her own skin ever since she was 11 to a self-assured, albeit struggling young man of 21, Ethan’s journey of self-discovery and sex change is a powerful message to all.
As we, in India, are finally moving forward – having recognized transgenders as the third gender – this video reminds us that ostracism was never the answer.
