Organizing a Small Living Space

Organizing a small living space can be a challenge when determining where to store your belongings and how to control clutter. By adopting a few simple strategies, you will be able to maximize your living space, conquer clutter and get organized.

Wall Storage:
Walls are a great use of space that is often neglected. Using wall-mounted shelving, a baker’s rack or cabinets provide a functional option for freeing up floor space and accommodating a number of storage solutions:
  • Photos and Photo Albums
  • Books, Catalogs or Magazines
  • Multi-Media
  • Office Supplies
  • Correspondence
  • Craft Supplies
  • Keepsakes
Additional Tip: Place storage containers or baskets on the shelves to hold personal belongings such as office supplies or craft supplies. Labeling the containers is helpful to identify the contents.

Under Bed Storage:
The empty space under your bed is a great place to accommodate containers or baskets to store a number of personal belongings:
  • Seasonal Clothing
  • Shoes
  • Hats, Scarves or Purses
  • Crafts
  • Blankets
  • Office Supplies
  • Books or Magazines
  • Exercise Equipment

Room Dividers:
In small areas, it can be difficult to create separate spaces and often times it can end up looking cluttered, even if it’s the tidiest of spaces. To avoid a cluttered look and to create defined spaces, room dividers are a great solution. They provide separation while having a functional and stylish purpose.

Furniture with Storage:
Furniture pieces with storage compartments provide a great space-saving option. For example, to avoid accumulating clutter on top of the coffee table, consider a table with drawers or place your own baskets or storage containers underneath the coffee table.

Another option is to use storage containers or baskets with lids stacked on top of each other in the place of end tables to hold magazines, remotes or multi-media. Trunks are also very useful to use as a coffee table to hold magazines, books or multi-media; or in front of the foot of your bed to hold extra blankets, linens or clothes.

Transform a Closet:
Closets are a great space to be used for alternative options than clothes. Removing the rod creates an empty enclosed space perfect for accommodating an office space, a craft area, a tool shop/workroom or any type of utility room. An added bonus is that you can close the door when the room is not in use to help create a separate space.

Additional Tip: Another option to create a separate area is to use an armoire for an office or craft room, the doors on the armoire will allow for the same function as a closet.
