Chalk Board Cake

Have you ever thought to create a wonderful whimsical cake that features a chalk board but did not know how to create this effect? You could certainly use a real chalkboard propped up on your cake but why bother when it is so simple to make an edible solution? You will need black fondant and candy melts, preferably white, to make a chalk board. It is best to purchase pre-tinted black fondant because it is very difficult to get a true black if you try to create black fondant using get colors. You might end up with an unsatisfying gray rather than deep black.

Chalk board cakes can be used for many different occasions which could include:
  • Back to school party cake or cupcakes with equations, book quotes, the names of the children or teacher, chalk apples, or simple welcome back! etched on the fondant.
  • Retirement party for a teacher or professor. Make a larger chalk board and list all the interesting activities the retiree will be enjoying.
  • A wedding cake. This application can cover a range of wedding themes with simple monograms to a cake covered completely in pretty abstract flowers. You can even take lovely poetry and write out entire verses on the sides of a cake.
  • A cake for a corporate event with the logo drawn on the sides of the cake or featured on cut outs for cupcakes. This is a particularly inspired idea for a school supply company.
  • A birthday cake for a child that is covered in happy sayings or their name in different sizes and colors.
The simplest chalk board design is creating small fondant cut outs to place on a cake or cupcakes. You will need to roll out the fondant so that it is about ¼ inch thick and then use a fondant smoother to create a lovely finish. Any cracks or flaws in your fondant will ruin the chalk board effect. You might have to wipe the fondant with a lightly moistened cloth to remove any white marks depending on what you use to prevent the fondant from sticking to your work surface.

After the fondant is rolled out and smoothed, use cutters or a ruler and sharp pastry wheel to create your shapes. You can let your fondant cut outs dry a little so that you don’t indent the surface when you write on it. Place your candy melts in the fridge so that they are thoroughly chilled. Cut a candy melt in half and use the cut edge to write in the fondant. You might have to use several cut melts to create the message you want.
You can also cover an entire cake, even a tiered creation, with black fondant and add drawings, monograms, pithy sayings, and graffiti like designs on the cake. Depending on your choice of chalk accent and talent for drawing, the finished cake could be severely elegant, charming, or intricate.
