St Patrick’s Day is right around the corner now that the hearts and
love of Valentine’s Day is out of the way. It seems like St. Pat’s day
is a manlier holiday drenched in beer and hearty stick to the ribs food
rather than chocolate and romance. This means the cake recipes can be a
little more flavorful and robust as well. So what are some spectacular
and appropriate cakes for this festive holiday? They can include:
- Irish Cream: What is more Irish than Irish cream? You can make a double dose confection with an Irish cream spiked cake and even more of this popular liqueur in the frosting. Top the whole thing off with some chocolate shavings or a sprinkle of instant coffee for a nice finishing kick of flavor.
- Rainbow Cake: This might not be an Irish themed flavor, but put a little pot of gold off to one side of this many layered cake and you will have a perfect finish to a St. Patrick’s Day party. Make sure you tint your cake batter with some vibrant colors and get the right order when you stack your lucky creation: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet (top to bottom). A green ombre cake is also a nice multilayer idea for St. Pat’s. Tint each cake layer a different darker green and then stack them from lightest to darkest with either white or green icing in between. Very festive!
- Mint Chocolate Cake: The green of the minty icing is a nice touch for the vent and you can spike your chocolate cake with a hit of dark beer to intensify the fudgy flavor. You can also add a nice shot of good whiskey to the cake batter instead of beer. Make sure you are replacing a liquid amount in the recipe rather than just adding extra alcohol! The icing does not even have to be a garish green on these cupcakes to create a perfect effect.
- Green Velvet Cake: This is obviously very similar to red velvet cake, but don’t add the food coloring to a chocolate based cake or the color will end up quite unappetizing. Try a vanilla cake with enough green in it to create an impact or you can take out part of your batter, tint it a pretty green, and swirl it back in for a marble effect. Add white or pale green frosting and you have a winner.
- Shamrock Cake Pops: If you are feeling very creative pick up a shamrock cake pop mold and create these charming treats on green sticks. Make the pops are directed, pop the out of the molds and dip them in melted green candy melts. You can add green sprinkles or a white chocolate drizzle but it is not necessary.
