Even if you don't have a green thumb, IKEA is out to prove that anyone can grow their own food, anywhere. The Swedish retailer just announced a new indoor gardening line — created with expert agricultural scientists — called the KRYDDA/VÄXER series.
While the correct pronunciation is a bit iffy, the miniature greenhouse fits in even the smallest apartment. That's because it uses a farming method called hydroponics, meaning the plants grow in water instead of soil.
The pre-fab bed comes with lettuce and herb seeds, which first sprout in a starter tray atop water-absorbent "plugs." Once they're mature enough, the stems are transplanted to little pots filled with crushed pumice, a type of stone that also soaks up tons of H2O.

If it sounds like there's potential to over- or under-water, don't fear. The planter comes with a built-in water-level sensor (genius!) to maintain proper hydration. And light's not an issue, either. You can place the plants in a sunny window, or take advantage of the solar lamp for 24/7 rays.
While there's no word yet on how much it will cost, IKEA did share that the kit will be available in April, just in time for gardening season.
