The 5 films to watch from Cannes 2017

By Mark Eccleston, Glamour

The dresses! The celebs! The parties! Oh, and the films. The 70th Cannes Film Festival might be over, but here’s our pick of the ones to watch.

Okja

The family movie is proving surprisingly controversial. Produced by Netflix, it hasn't shown in French cinemas - enough to get it roundly booed at the screening. They're going to change the rules next year. The film by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho story is innocent enough. A young girl befriends a cuddly hippo creature. But a ruthless CEO (Tilda Swinton) captures it to try and sell its meat. Joining in the rescue are a group of animal rights activists including Paul Dano. If this doesn't make you a vegetarian then nothing will.

The Beguiled

Nicole Kidman owned Cannes this year with three films showing, but this was the best. Set in the Deep South during the Civil War, she plays a headmistress in charge of a handful of pupils at an abandoned girls school. Then an injured Union soldier (Colin Farrell) turns up and old arguments and new sexual tensions rise to the surface... before it gets really nasty. Cannes regular Sofia Coppola directs another strong female cast including Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning.

You Were Never Really There

Director Todd Hayes makes a shift into kids films after a string of award-winning dramas, including Carol and Certain Women. The moving story of two deaf 12-year-olds is played out across two time frames. A boy trying to trace his father in 1977, and a girl searching for a silent movie star (Julianne Moore) 50 years earlier. The sentimental tale punctuated with long wordless sections is getting rave reviews. It also introduces a new star, the 14-year-old deaf actress Millicent Simmonds who blew away filmmakers in auditions.

Good Time

Robert Pattinson is looking more dishevelled than we'd like for his first crime thriller. He's a bank robber from Queens, New York, who botches his latest robbery. Now his brother is in jail and he needs to get the money to bust him out. Set over one intense day, RPatz - wearing a goatee and grubby hoody - rattles from one violent encounter to the next. Also in Cannes this week is RPatz's old flame Kristen Stewart for a short film she directed called Come Swim, a surreal piece about a man having a breakdown.
