Let's be real, furniture shopping can be stressful,
expensive and sometimes, unfruitful—especially for consumers looking for
quality, stylish pieces at an affordable price point. If you're over
the generic furniture available at big box furniture stores, but don't
quite have the budget to throw down $6,000 on a couch from Restoration
Hardware, what are your options?
Enter: Maiden Home,
the new concept in custom furniture that allows you to shop gorgeous,
craftsmen quality furniture at affordable and reasonable prices.
Founder
and CEO Nidhi Kapur realized there was a major gap in the furniture
market when she was shopping for her first home with her husband. “We
wanted our first set of nice furniture, as we had both been living with
disposable pieces in the past. We were hoping to take our time and look
for better quality pieces," she says. But what they came across was
either subpar or just way too expensive. Having worked at the beauty
brand Birchbox for three years, Kapur had seen what it takes to
revolutionize an industry with fresh, innovative ideas. So with her
professional knowhow and passion for furniture, Maiden Home came to be.
Below, read our Q&A to see what makes the brand so unique and how
you can get your hands on one of the pieces—stat.

How did you find the designers and craftsmen that build Maiden Home furniture?
NK:
“My plan was to create the highest quality furniture that I possibly
could—then figure out a way to deliver it at a revolutionary price. A
bit of research led me to North Carolina, historically the world's
premier source for high-end furniture. I cold-called factories, set up
meetings and spent a week immersed in their world in April 2015. That's
when I first built relationships with the craftsmen and furniture
designers we would work with to bring Maiden Home to life. Their
response was really phenomenal. I approached them as a true partner, and
every day work to celebrate their amazing craft through Maiden Home.
Most of these are family run businesses, and they work with such
integrity–which is reflected in the beauty and quality of our
furniture."
Who is the Maiden Home customer?
NK:
“Young couples and families. They're not necessarily hiring a designer
to take over everything. We do very well among young moms, they're
usually in a place where they're trying to decorate a bigger apartment
or their first suburban home. They care about quality, toxin-free
furniture at a great value—not to mention convenience. We're really
speaking to a style conscious customer who is dissatisfied with generic
designs she finds at our competitors."
We read a review from a customer that said “My slipper chair came timely with construction photos updating personal communication" Can you explain this?
NK: “We make every piece in 30 days or
less. During that time, customers get weekly updates as their piece
moves through production: like today we're cutting the frame or the
fabric. That's what custom is about, the piece is being made just for
you so you should feel personally connected it."

Are there specific designers who have inspired your designs?
NK:
“The vision came from a look I felt like was missing in the market. I
previously lived in the West Village, it's such a cool neighborhood with
a modern sensibility alongside classic architecture. I couldn't find
furniture that fit the classic-meets-modern look I wanted to create in
my home. The market is so oversaturated with mid-century modern. Our
timeless look, with clean lines and beautiful handcrafted details, only
exists at much higher price points. The details really distinguish
Maiden Home designs. There's a lot to furniture design beyond the
looks."
What is the most important thing consumers should know about Maiden Home?
“We're
delivering the best value in luxury furniture, bar none. When customers
buy from the average furniture retailer, the furniture has passed
through a number of hands, and each middleman adds their own markup.
We're truly the most efficient way—from the craftsmen to your home. That's how we can sell you a $6,000 sofa for $2,000."
