Make Your Home More Accessible

Whether you are starting to feel that you might be in trouble and you’ll need some help, or you are thinking about some friends and relatives of yours, you need to make sure that you can make your home accessible to the necessary people as best as you can. You would be surprised to discover just how few homes really are as accessible as they should be, and this is something that a lot of people are starting to have to think about in recent years, much to their surprise. You will of course need to budget this all out and make sure that you know what you are doing, but it’s important first up to just have a sense of what kinds of changes you might need to make in your home in order to make it more accessible.

Entrance Ramps

One of the most important of all is that you make sure that everyone gets in to the main entrances and exits as easily as possible. In the case of those in wheelchair, that will mean that you need to install ramps. You should do this at every entrance and exit, as otherwise there might be trouble for that individual if there is ever a fire or other reason for having to evacuate. Entrance ramps come in many kinds these days, but some of the best are the simplest. If you shop around, you should be able to get a hold of an aluminum ramp which you can install on your entranceway and exit, and generally that should be enough for most people’s disabilities. As long as people can get in and out easily, that is the most important thing.

Bathroom Doors

The bathroom is going to be an issue too. It is one of the most important parts of the home that you need to consider here, and that is because it is a room you are going to have to be in many times day after day. As such, it needs to be as accessible as possible, and the main hurdle getting in the way of that is that bathrooms are often positioned at a part of the home where the door does not open all that wide. That could be a real problem for someone in a wheelchair, so generally you are going to want to make sure that the door angle is at least 32 degrees for a clear passage. If not, any disabled individual will probably be unable to enter the bathroom, which is clearly far from ideal.

Convenience Of Tools

You’ll also need to make sure that anything an individual might need to use is within reach easily. So if someone is disabled and they need to cook something, they will need to be able to reach a worktop, and be able to reach where all the utensils are and so on. This is far preferable to having everything done for them, and it is easier than you might think to make your home this accessible if you really try. Convenience of tools is actually one of the most important parts of this overall.
