Streaks on mirrors can be maddening—especially when your cleaning method creates even more of them. For decades, old newspapers were our secret weapon for crystal-clear glass, but after it was revealed that the petroleum-based inks they used were harmful to the environment, printers switched to organic soy-based formulations. This makes the paper safer to recycle but, in our experience, don't get glass as squeaky-clean. So, toss your Sunday papers in the blue bin. Ahead, follow these simple steps to a spotless finish for the mirrors in your home.

Start with the Frame

We recommend beginning the cleaning process with the mirror's frame. You will need just one type of essential to get this part looking its best again: cloths. As for the method? Start by dusting away particles with a microfiber towel. Next, wipe the frame with a damp, lint-free rag, and follow with a dry cloth to reveal a brighter surface below.

Spritz the Surface

Want to know Martha's best tip to get your mirror's glass surface sparkling again? She sprays glass cleaner or a solution of equal parts vinegar and water on an old cotton T-shirt—never on the mirror itself, or it might damage the frame—then thoroughly wipes down the entire surface.

Dry It Quickly

Return to your handy microfiber cloths to finish cleaning your mirror—but make sure it's a fresh one. After you spray and de-streak the glass, immediately wipe down the surface to avoid small water marks, which could appear later, otherwise. After you complete this step, your mirror should look as good as new.
