Buying your first home is a major milestone, and you should be proud of yourself. The experience is exciting, stressful, and maybe even overwhelming; however, it’s one of the most memorable moments in your life. Whether you already have all your furniture or next to nothing, you can benefit from learning everything you need to furnish your first home.
Bedroom Items
Your bedroom is easily the most important space to furnish because you’ll need a place to sleep as soon as you move in. Consider the following list of pieces you may need for the perfect bedroom.
- Bedroom set: your bedroom set usually consists of a bed frame, dresser, and two nightstands. You may have to purchase your mattress separately.
- Bedding: You’ll need sheets, a comforter, pillowcases, blankets, and maybe even a mattress protector. Otherwise, you likely won’t sleep well.
- Bedside lamps: This one is optional, but most people prefer having a lamp or other dim light source beside their bed.
Your bedroom is also a good place to start when it comes to personalization and decorating. Consider hanging a few signs or pieces of artwork right away to help yourself settle into your new home.

Bathroom Essentials
Many homes have more than one bathroom; therefore, you may need to get a few items for each one. Also, you will need to decide which one will be your primary bathroom.
- Shower curtain: Unless you have doors on your shower, you won’t be able to take a shower without a curtain.
- Towels: You’ll need full-sized towels, hand towels, and washcloths for each bathroom.
- A trash can and toilet brush: These are other bathroom essentials, and you should try to get them as soon as possible.
