Walking Miles Better For Mums

Walk with your baby, it is the best way to get back into exercise and fitness after giving birth

Walking is great exercise for you and could be soothing for your baby

It's a well-known fact that walking is good for your health, with benefits ranging from reducing your risk of heart disease to inducing deep and restful slumber. But could walking also be good for new mums, in both body and soul?

According to most mums a bit more exercise makes them better able to cope with the stress and strain of having a new baby. Infacol (contains simeticone), Britain's Number One Infant Colic remedy, asked 142 mums how they rethink their lifestyle choices after they have a baby. It showed that 3 out of 4 mums agree that walking with your baby is the best way to get back into exercise and fitness post baby.

Getting out and about can also benefit your baby, according to Expert Midwife Nikki Khan, especially during a stressful bout of colic, she says "Some mums find movement helps soothe their colicky baby so I would suggest going for a walk with your baby preferably in a carrier, rather than a pram, to help aid digestion. It's about what works for you and your little one."

Mum of two Lucy can relate to this "With my first son, Joe, I tried everything I could think of to soothe his colic as it was such a stressful time. By the time I had my youngest, Eli, I knew that the best thing I could do for both of us was stay calm and be patient. I took him out in his carrier a lot - the movement helped him settle and he didn't go in a push chair until about six months because he loved his carrier so much!"

With an astounding 90% of mums describing colic as one of their top concerns as a parent, and a further 50% saying it caused them to feel 'very stressed', Expert Midwife Nikki Khan emphasizes the importance of taking time for yourself, she says "Remember that colic doesn't mean either mum or dad are doing anything wrong, and that colic will pass by the time the baby is six months old latest. And don't forget to look after yourself properly as well - a happy mum will often mean a happy baby."
