Two years ago, my boyfriend began to wrap the laces of his winter boots around his ankle and tie them neatly with a bow. “Why?” I inquired. “Because the laces are too long,” he said matter-of-factly. “And it supports the ankle—it’s functional. It’s practical.” And we left it at that.
[post_ads]Cut to present day, and there’s 15-year-old Kaia Gerber—Cindy Crawford’s daughter, aspiring model, style influencer, “It” girl—tying her white Converse Chuck Taylor high-tops the very same way. Um is my boyfriend the ultimate trend-setter? It looks to be that way.
But there are a couple of differences between these two shoelace-tying looks, like the fact that Gerber tied hers with sneakers versus boots, and how she put them on display (my boyfriend always had his tucked away from sight beneath the cuffs of his pants—also side note: If he ever wore tiny denim shorts, I might have to reconsider some things). As a result, the mere presence of those two darling little bows gives a swift kick of sweetness to Gerber’s street-chic, downtown-cool edge. And combined with frayed cut-offs (to show off her enviably long legs, of course), a ‘90s flame-printed hoodie, her fur pom-adorned cross-body, and retro frames, it’s model off-duty perfection at its finest.

And frankly, who wouldn’t want bows bedecked on everything and with every look? It’s already a spring fashion trend and an emerging fall hair one. Maybe that was the whole idea behind Gerber’s look. Or perhaps her shoelaces were just too damn long.
