Decorating Resolutions for 2017

By Lauren Flanagan, The Spruce

If you love your home and want to make it the best it can be, put these decorating resolutions at the top of your list.

I Will Not Get Discouraged By a Small Budget

[post_ads]Decorating can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. So don't let a small budget stop you from achieving your decorating goals. Make a decorating resolution this year that no matter how small your budget you will find creative ways to make your decorating dreams come true.

Shop at garage sales, yard sales, and sample sales. Try upcycling second hand pieces, or making your own art. Look into barter websites where you can trade items. Or hold a decor exchange with friends where you all bring items you no longer want and trade them. No matter what your style you can make a decorating budget and stick to it by getting creative. It's easier than you might think!

I Will Not Rush the Decorating Process

Trying to get a room decorated in a hurry can lead to all sorts of regrets. Financial being just one of them. Decorating is a process and it should be treated as such. It's often said that a room should look like it has evolved over time and that can't happen in a day, or a week, or even a month.

Take the time to find out what's out there so that you can really discover what you love, what will work best in your home, and what can fit in your budget. When you try to decorate a room too quickly you can end up with things you might not have chosen had you not been in such a hurry.

When you're sitting at home relaxing the last thing you want is to be surrounded by items you feel so-so about. So take your time and find the things that are right for you.

I Will Take More Decorating Risks

It's not uncommon to play it safe when decorating. Most of us try to follow the rules and do all the things we're supposed to do.

But if this has been your attitude in the past it might be time to shake things up a little bit and take a few decorating risks. Try something like painting your ceiling or trim a color other than white, go wild and decorate with a lot of prints, or try creating a unique accent wall.

It doesn't really matter what you do as long as you express your personality and have some fun. Don't be too afraid about making decorating mistakes, because as long as you stay true to yourself it will all work out in the end.

I Will Only Buy What I Love

All too often people end up purchasing items because they think they're supposed to have them or supposed to like them. It's very easy to get caught up in the "supposed to haves" and lose track of what you truly want. For instance, it's generally believed that a living room has to have a sofa. But why If you don't want one, don't get one!

The same goes for each and every item in your home. So this year make the decorating resolution to stay true to yourself and fill your home only with things you really love. Every single item in your home should make you smile, and if it doesn't, it doesn't belong there.

I Will Not Fall for Impractical Trends

Trends can be very controversial.

In some ways they can be a lot of fun, but depending on the size and scope they can also be quite risky. If a trend involves spending a lot of money through renovations or major decor changes, think twice. However if a trend is something that can be simplified, give it a try! So if a color like bright red suddenly becomes trendy, don't rush to reupholster all your furniture or paint entire rooms.

Instead look for simple, inexpensive ways to incorporate it, such as with throw pillows or blankets. But also make sure that any trends you incorporate are still practical for your lifestyle. If it becomes trendy to only use sofas that don't have arms, but you're someone who likes to nap on the sofa, don't do it. Everything in your home needs to make sense for you - trendy or not.

I Will Decorate with Comfortable Furniture

One of the biggest decorating mistakes out there is to use furniture that looks great but isn't comfortable.

Just because you see a piece in a store and you love how it looks, it doesn't mean you should buy it. An uncomfortable sofa or chair has no value in living rooms and family rooms where comfort is so important. So resolve to test out furniture before you buy and make sure it feels as good as it looks.

I Will Rearrange the Furniture

Every room can use a little pick me up on occasion, and fortunately it can be done without spending a penny. Rearranging the furniture is a great risk-free way to give a room a whole new look, and what's particularly great is that if after a few days you decide you don't love it, you can change it back to exactly the way it was. So if you've got a room in your home that's looking a little tired, instead of trying to redecorate, give it a lift by simply arranging the furniture in a different way.

I Will Get Rid of Clutter

This is more than just a decorating resolution - it's a life resolution! Clutter can weigh us down and the only way to lighten things up is to get rid of the clutter. So this year resolve to really edit your space, let items breathe, and eliminate the things that weigh you down. This could mean getting rid of unnecessary accessories, old memorabilia that no longer has a place, and all the flotsam and jetsam that collects in our homes without us really being aware of it.

I Will Style My Bookshelves

Do you tend to fill your bookshelves with just books and nothing but books? If so, consider trying something a little different this year. A properly styled bookshelf, complete with art, photos and accessories, is an important part of any well-decorated home, and, while seemingly subtle, it can really make or break a room. It's also a great way to express some creativity and really learn the art of styling. So in every room take a little time to style your bookshelves and you'll notice a big difference.

I Will Rearrange My Art

A very simple but very effective way to give a room a little bit of a new look is to rearrange the art on the walls.

Change the placement and arrangements, but also consider taking the art from one room and putting it in another. In some cases art placement is very well-thought out, which can make this exercise a little intimidating. But in most homes it's really not that big a deal, particularly if you use removable sticky hooks to hang art and photographs.

I Will Not Choose Paint Colors Online

While it's perfectly ok to be inspired by paint colors you see in photographs or on websites, it's important not to choose colors based only on that. Why? Because they're not true to life. Magazine photos are touched up, computer monitors vary, and rooms in television shows are lit differently than they are in real life. So this year resolve to test paint colors properly.

Test small areas of each room and watch how the light affects it throughout the day. You may find you need something a little lighter or a little darker. You might also decide the color just doesn't work. But it's much better to have only tested a small area than to have painted the whole room.
