Why do we dream the way we do?

By Serena Carsley

Do you ever wonder why you have been having a certain recurring dream all the time, and what they really mean? How did you manage to have such a crazy dream? For most people, dreams are a serious mystery.  They are often very hard to make sense of, even we can even remember them, to begin with.  Research in dream mythology and dream interpretation gives some answers to some of the popular dream questions.

Firstly, does everyone dream? Biologically, we all dream at some point or another while sleeping. However, there are people who stand by the belief that they have never dreamed. There are of course people who find it very challenging to remember their dreams, but this most certainly does not mean they are not dreaming.
Some people resist facing the amount of growth in unconscious throughout within dreams.  There are other people who chose to do this at a more subtle pace.  Human beings need to cream as a part of the body’s natural response to stress to anxiety, stress, and fear.

People have recurring dreams due to unique life lessons throughout life, and sometimes these things stay with us forever. Recurring dreams usually are built around a specific theme, and often change in small ways as we grow a different self-understanding as well the challenges around us.

Breaking down your dream is a careful way can reveal small changes to the way that we perceive everything, however, we often like to think that everything is exactly the same. Recurring dreams can be a helpful way to see our own development and growth.  Paying attention to the little details of your recurring dreams can teach you a great deal about yourself.

Have you ever wondered what your nightmares mean? Are you experiencing a lot of fear in your life? Well, nightmares often suggest that there is something we need to deal with that creates fear within yourself. Nightmares can also be an effective way to release these certain fears, based on how in the dream itself, we respond to them

Nightmares are such a nightmare

If you wake up from a terrible nightmare and try to forget it right away, you will likely experience this dream again, since you did not properly learn from it and grow for it.  Nightmares are not signs that something bad is about to come, but are merely supposed to serve as lessons. They are supposed to shake us up and make us want to take action into addressing our anxiety confronting our deep rooted fears.

Nightmares are a natural response to anxiety and fear. Although they are not very pleasant in the moment, they in fact release pressure. With this, our psyche can work better with less anxiety. Nightmares also are a way of stopping and asking yourself what you are afraid of, and what you dream is saying about you at this very moment.

How is that our dreams do not usually follow a pattern that makes sense? Most people do not think in a linear pattern.  This is mainly since most humans think is vastly abstract ways.  People often think that they logical, but in reality, most our thoughts in the waking hours are highly illogical.

And therefore, dream are a representation of our unconscious compilation of thoughts and actions.  If we were actually really logical creatures,  then we would be more robot-like. Robots do not dream, and illogical and dreaming is a part of being a human being.

Can we control our dreams?

Another interesting question is if people can control their dreams? If you can actually control everything you do, as well as say and think when you are awake, then you have a very likely chance of being able to control your dreams.

We can often return to a dream from the past that we want to by laying in bed prior to sleeping and trying to replay the dream. The secret to this is being able to identify oneself with the feeling from the previous dream and come into a similar element prior to sleeping

If you are curious about how often we actually dream, then you might be surprised to hear that we dream every night, and mostly even throughout all sleep cycles. However, research suggests that the most vivid dreams happen during the REM sleep cycle.

Some myths about dreaming include the belief that some of us do not dream. Another common myth is that if you die in your sleep you will never wake up. This specific dream has a lot more to do with the general anxiety about death and has connection to actually dying.

When analyzing and trying to understand dream, it is important to pay attention to how you are feeling before, as well as during and after a dream. Try to take note of who the main people are in your dream, and try to understand what they represent to you, both in and out of the dream.

You should be wary of depending on dream books in order to order your dreams, since there are often misconceptions about the unconscious as a collective, and is not always accurate. There are some universal understandings about what things symbolize, but they simply do not always match up.
