Everyone knows to not wear white at a wedding , but there are also some rules and regulations you should follow for giving a speech at the reception. If you’ve been selected as the best man or maid of honor, it’s tradition to give a thoughtful, heartfelt and humorous toast to the newlyweds. To make sure their day is as perfect as can be, it’s important to note one thing when you’re writing your speech: Do not make negative comments of any kind about the bride or groom.
In her book “From Clueless to Class Act: Manners for the Modern Woman,” etiquette expert Jodi R. R. Smith advises that if you run out of things to say or you're trying to be funny, you should not resort to making disparaging remarks about the bride, groom or event — and that goes to everyone in attendance, not just the person with the microphone.
So, what does that entail? Don’t talk about past relationships — even if it’s something as seemingly mundane as mentioning that the groom’s ex-girlfriend was a bad cook — and don’t tell any embarrassing jokes or anecdotes, no matter how harmless they seem. And keep stories family-friendly so that your friend or family member doesn't feel umcomfortable on their special day.
