When it comes to maintaining your home, you have a lot on your plate. You’re probably already busy with weekly chores and other tasks. But people tend to overlook other maintenance-related tasks even though they’re just as important as those we remember. Here are some of the household chores you may have forgotten about.
Update Your First Aid Kit
If you don’t have one, this is the time to create one. Whether you use a pre-made kit that you purchased from a drugstore or make your own, it’s important to keep basic supplies on hand in case of an emergency. Here are a few things to add:
- Bandages for cuts and scrapes
- Burn cream for minor burns
- Antihistamine tablets for insect bites and stings
- Antiseptic wipes for cleaning wounds
- Eye drops in case of an allergic reaction
Check expiration dates on medications, refill any missing items, and be sure that everyone knows where to locate the kit.
Change the Batteries in Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Batteries are cheap and easy to forget, but this is one of the most important household chores you can do! When it comes to fire safety, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are pretty much your first line of defense against an unplanned disaster. They’re also easy to forget about since they don’t make noise all the time.
However, forgetting about this household chore can lead to a disaster that you could have otherwise avoided. Change their batteries every six months, and use brand-new batteries with the same voltage and amperage as those you used previously.
Clean Your Gutters
Cleaning your gutters is an important part of the home maintenance process. Many people overlook the gutters because they’re mostly out of sight, but you must include them in your seasonal cleaning routine.
When leaves build up in gutters, they can cause clogs or overflow onto the roof, where it collects water faster than expected. This can lead to serious issues, like mold growth on walls and ceilings and foundational damage!
Clean or Replace Your Air Conditioner Filters
If you want to keep your air conditioner running efficiently, it’s important to keep the filter in good shape. The recommended frequency of filter cleaning depends on how much dust and debris are typically in your home. You should also consider the quality of your HVAC system. If you have a newer model with high-efficiency filtration, you can potentially go much longer without having to clean the filter than if you have an older model with less efficient filters. But no matter what type of system you have, they all need some form of maintenance now and again.
