How to Remove Glitter Eyeshadow

There’s no easier way to glam up your outfit than with some glitter eyeshadow. Glitter eye shadow is uber fun, super dramatic and a great way to look dressy even in your simplest clothes. There’s a reason runway shows are rampant with the glitter eyeshadow look and why party girls prefer it too when they’re dressing up to dance the night away. Look here for more tips on how to sport this much-loved makeup trend.

But glitter eyeshadow does have one small drawback – it’s really hard to get it off. You can wash and rub as much as you want (which you really shouldn’t) but there will be some glitter left. Even a little residue of glitter can irritate the over-sensitive skin around the eyes, lead to itching, burning or even an infection. And it’s not like you can use regular makeup remover on your eyes because those usually contain alcohol and other chemicals which are unhealthy for the skin around the eyes.

So what can you do about removing all that glitter eyeshadow before you go to bed? You definitely cannot sleep with it on because that will just increase your risk of infections. And you can’t just keep rubbing at it and splashing water on your face either because neither of those methods are very efficient in removing glitter eye shadow all the way. Fortunately, there’s more than one way to deal with this little problem so you can pick a solution that suits your needs best.

Use Eye Makeup Remover
Regular eye makeup removers will not make the cut. Glitter eye shadow usually has a slight glue base which does not easily come off. Look for eye makeup removers which specifically target glitter eye shadow. Oil based ones work best. These can cost a pretty penny but are convenient and travel-friendly.

Oil to Remove Glitter Eye Shadow
This is one of the simplest, safest and most economical methods of removing glitter eyeshadow. All you need is some kind of oil, preferably natural coconut or olive oil. Avoid oil which has added perfumes as perfume too is an irritant.

  • Take a little oil in the palm of your hands.
  • DIP your fingers into this oil and very, very gently rub on your eyelids for thirty seconds to a minute. You need to do it for this long because the stubborn glue needs a little time to come undone from the surface of your skin.
  • Leave the oil on for another 30 seconds so it can really work its magic.
  • Dip a cotton ball in water, squeeze so it is not dripping, then gently mop off the oil. Move in upward strokes, away from the eyes. If you move downward, there’s a risk that the glitter will get into your eyes.
  • Splash your face with warm water and pat clean with a clean, dry towel.

Cold Cream for Glitter Eyeshadow Removal
If you can’t lay your hands on oil, any cold cream will also do the trick. Follow the same steps as above but do it with cold cream instead of oil.

With all these methods, be extremely gentle and make sure that none of the solutions – oil, cold cream or eye makeup remover – get in your eyes. And here’s something else you may want to consider – if there’s so much glitter eye shadow on your lids that it becomes a task to take it off, it is veeeeery likely that you are using far too much to begin with.
