Golden Rules For Drinking In Public

Drinking has always been a social thing; the ice-breaker, the loosener, the thing that sets other things in motion, the party starter, and tonnes more.

But there are few boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed and grey areas that shouldn’t be trespassed. With this small guide, we tell you to skip out on few things to make your alcohol-induced escapades more fun!

Buying Drinks
Buying drinks is a common practice to set the mood for the evening. You may be out with your friends, acquaintances or even work-mates, and the mood is set, order a round on yourself. This’ll break the ice and set the equation for the times to come, and also bring a new level of comfort among you all. Albeit, this can’t be implied if you’re buying a drink for a stranger in a bar. Buying one drink is perfect, if the conversation kicks in and if you think the night has just started, order for another one. Buying one drink is cool; buying all the drinks is sheer stupidity!

Bartender’s equation
There might be few nights when the bartender is your best friend. He is the one who concocts your cocktails and opens your beer bottles. Be polite to him. Treat him as a respectable entity around. Maintain eye contact and smile while ordering. If he’s too bogged down with work, tell him to give yours as and when possible. Don’t be a snob. Setting the right equation with the bartender will earn you massive brownie points. Complimentary beer, a shot extra, extended happy hours, and a potential wingman, the bartender will be all these and more.

Borrowing Code
Yet another important aspect of drinking in public is the borrow code. If you are in need of a cigarette and don’t have one, refrain from smoking that night, and if you really need to, borrow a cigarette just once. Borrowing more than once from the same person just isn’t cool. The same goes for borrowing anything that night more than once from the same person. Fend for yourself in such situations for it may not reflect well on your image.

Never Say No
Anyone you know is gladly offering you a drink and you’re politely refusing it? Don’t. That person would be doing so to break the ice, or just set the groove for the future. Don’t decline unless you’re already hammered and can’t consume anymore, or if you want that person to burn in hell. The same goes for complimentary drinks. If a familiar bartender is giving you an extra swig, accept it with a smile, it’s your lucky day!

You may encounter various people and interact with few, yet you should be careful when to talk and what to talk. In the loo? Don’t bother to do too much talking, that’ll be downright awkward. On a table? Don’t talk to the person at the other end. Relocate and continue the conversation. Song request to the DJ? Give just one, if he plays give him another one after a brief period of time. He’ll appreciate your choice and recommendation and won’t consider you to be too forthcoming. Tip the waiters and bartenders generously. You may land up on their shoulders sometimes!
