Michelle Kaufmann is an architect, designer, and advocate for smarter ways to design, build, and live. Her mission in all of her work is to make thoughtful, sustainable design accessible. Michelle has been called "the Henry Ford of green homes" by the Sierra Club and has been featured on the Sundance Channel, HGTV, Discovery, and Planet Green, and in numerous magazines including Town + Country, Dwell, Sunset, Time, and the Smithsonian Magazine. Here are her three easy tips to make our homes greener right now!
1. Reuse your water. When you are done using water to boil pasta, or you have extra unused water from your tea, pour that water into your plants, rather than down the drain.
2. Add more insulation. A lot of older, existing homes have good bones and shouldn't be torn down. However, a lot of them were built without proper insulation. Adding more insulation is a great way to make your house more efficient.
3. Add an energy meter. You can go super high-tech, or even low-tech. Having the information is powerful, as then you can make adjustments accordingly.
